FAQs

  • During your first consultation, Dr Allan will discuss your medical history, understand your goals, and explore treatment options. An initial consultation for reconstruction and cosmetic procedures is typically 30 minutes, while simple skin or hand appointments are 15-30 minutes. With your permission, Dr Allan may take confidential clinical photos to aid in your care.

For complex cases, Dr Allan provides a complimentary follow-up consultation to allow enough time for reflection, questions, and personalised surgery planning. Dr Allan takes a patient-centred approach, allowing enough time to build rapport, connect with patients, and create a caring and reassuring environment. Before your consultation, you’re encouraged to write a list of questions to ask your surgeon to make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

  • Your consultation fee will depend on your reason for meeting with Dr Allan. Please contact our team at Plastic Surgery Queensland at (07) 3844 6069 to discuss your fee. If you have a referral from your General Practitioner, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate; please talk to our team if this applies to your situation.

  • All fees will be discussed with you after your initial consultation, as they will depend on the type of treatment required. If surgery is planned, our team will provide you with a transparent written estimate that outlines Dr Allan’s fees, as well as anaesthetic, pathology, and insurance excesses.

Medicare covers reconstructive procedures and will include a rebate. Your private health insurer may also contribute, depending on your policy cover level. Please note, Medicare rebates do not apply to cosmetic surgery and are not typically covered by private health insurance.

If you’re unsure whether your procedure is eligible for a Medicare rebate, talk to your General Practitioner when collecting your referral.

  • We highly recommend having a referral to book a consultation with Dr Allan. Your referral letter includes valuable information about your background, medical history, and condition — allowing us to understand your needs better.

If you meet certain eligibility criteria, you can claim a Medicare rebate for specialist consultation. As of July 1, 2023, all cosmetic consultations require a referral from your General Practitioner and do not qualify for Medicare rebates.

  • Like any surgery, undergoing reconstructive or cosmetic procedures carries some risk, so it is important to be informed and make a confident decision. Some risks apply to any invasive surgical procedure, such as bleeding, scarring and infection, among more specific risks, depending on your surgery plan.

You can minimise risks by keeping healthy, well-informed, and prepared for your surgery. It’s crucial to choose a qualified and experienced Specialist Plastic Surgeon and allow time for recovery. If you’re unsure about the risks involved in your surgery, Dr Allan is happy to discuss them in detail and empower you in your decision-making.

  • Dr Allan welcomes private patients to book a consultation by contacting his rooms at Plastic Surgery Queensland in South Brisbane at (07) 3844 6069.

Dr Allan operates privately at the following hospitals:

  • Yes; as of July 1, 2023, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) requires the assessment of all patients seeking cosmetic procedures before surgery. This new requirement ensures patients are suitable for cosmetic surgery and identifies whether they may have an underlying psychological condition.

Our team at Plastic Surgery Queensland will help you with your assessment questionnaire, which Dr Allan will discuss with you during your consultation. Please note, this requirement doesn’t apply to reconstructive and non-cosmetic procedures such as skin cancer or hand surgery. Learn more about the latest guidelines.

  • Plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons are commonly mistaken as being equal. This is not the case. A Specialist Plastic Surgeon is a Commonwealth Government-accredited Plastic Surgeon trained and qualified to perform invasive cosmetic and reconstruction procedures. They have obtained a Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) — the highest surgical training recognised in Australia.

On the other hand, a cosmetic surgeon does not hold the same level of recognised qualifications, training or expertise. It’s important to note that anyone with a medical degree can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon in Australia, even without formal surgical training. The Know the Difference campaign can help you learn how to spot the difference between registered and non-registered plastic surgeons.
