RECONSTRUCTION

Post Cancer

BREAST

A breast cancer diagnosis can be an overwhelming journey, especially if your Breast Surgeon advises that a mastectomy is needed. Dr Allan is highly experienced in after-cancer reconstruction and regularly works closely with Breast Surgeons throughout Brisbane.

He’ll compassionately walk you through all options in detail and hold space for any questions you may have. While there are several options available for breast reconstruction depending on your preferences and personal circumstances, below are the two most common solutions he often provides for patients:

  1. Replacing your breast tissue with an implant (alloplastic reconstruction). It’s important to note that this option may require multiple operations depending on your circumstances.

  2. Using your tissue to create a breast (autologous reconstruction). Your own tissue best replicates the look and feel of a natural breast; however, this option requires a donor site from your body, such as your tummy or below the umbilicus (belly button).

During this operation, Dr Allan takes tissue with its blood supply and transposes it to your chest while anastomosing (plugging in) to the blood vessels using microsurgery, known as a ‘free flap’.
