Post-surgical garments: why they’re important for recovery

Post-surgical garments can play a vital role in your recovery journey after plastic or cosmetic surgery.

These specialised garments are not an optional extra – they’re more like part 2 of your procedure. If you want the best results from your surgery, please wear them as recommended by your surgeon.

What do post-surgical compression garments actually do?

Post-surgical compression garments aid your recovery by:

  • Reducing swelling: Swelling is a common response after surgery, as the body naturally sends fluids to the surgical area. Compression garments help minimise this swelling by applying gentle pressure, preventing fluid build-up and enhancing comfort.

  • Supporting tissues as they heal: Your skin is delicate after surgery, particularly around the incisions. Post-surgical garments support your body, reducing strain on these tissues while they heal and providing much-needed stability, encouraging your skin to conform to the shape of your body.

  • Improving circulation: Post-surgical garments provide consistent pressure, which helps to enhance blood flow, bringing oxygen and nutrients that promote healing. Good circulation also reduces the risk of post-surgical complications like blood clots and infections.

Types of post-surgical garments

The type of post-surgical garment you need is related to your specific surgery. Depending on which area of your body has been operated on, your surgeon may recommend:

  • General post-surgical compression garments: These versatile garments can be used after various procedures, especially where multiple areas of the body may need support.

  • Post-surgical abdominal compression garments: These wrap securely around your abdomen to support your core muscles and prevent excess swelling after an abdominoplasty. Such support helps you maintain good posture and can reduce discomfort while you recover.

  • Surgical recovery bra: This looks a bit like a firm, high-impact sports bra (with no underwriting). It’s used after breast augmentation, breast reduction or breast reconstruction to relieve post-operative pain

Choosing the right post-surgical garment

The best garment for your needs depends on your procedure, body shape and recovery needs, considering factors like:

  • Fit: It should be tight but not too tight – you need to feel comfortable and be able to move

  • Coverage: It should cover the whole surgical area (e.g. from your chest to your hips if you’ve had abdominal surgery)

  • Design: Is it easy to put on and take off, especially in the early days of your recovery? Does it have adjustable straps? Can you close it in front where it’s easier to manage?

  • Material: Look for something stretchy and breathable that doesn’t irritate your skin.

Hopefully, this means you’ll have a comfortable compression garment – one that you’re willing and able to wear consistently throughout your recovery.

Ask for your surgeon’s advice to help you choose something medically appropriate that suits your body shape and preferences.
